How do I understand 'self'?
Psychology. I recommend picking up a book or two.

You're talking philosophy here.

"all you have to do is look" if common sense were a reliable indicator of reality, we wouldn't need science.

but then all you have to do is look at the increadible design that's in our bodies - let alone the brain to realise there is definately more to life than "matter acting on matter".An interesting thought randal but i'm not sure if it is to your usual standard (which is hard to maintain.) ;-)

i thought that nervouse tissue didn't replicate or grow?
surely the scientists will just say that our memories, thought processes and concience are all stored in banks of brain cells by the structure and pathways that they create - and when teach cell is replaced by an identical cell, the pathways are not disturbed and therefor the brain content is maintained.

(But "me" still knows things I did 8yr ago)
Correction - But the "me" still knows things I knew, such as certain truths that I knew 8 yrs. ago and prior to that. For those truths to now still be verified, thus still known as truths, is not a result of memory.

Excellent perspective! It also seems that if we were nothing more than material beings, that we shouldn't be capable of remembering anything beyond 7 years into the past. Just as you asked, "where is the real me being stored"? Also, where is our memory being stored? I suppose it can be argued that since all of our cells are not replaced in one instance. That as some are replaced, our memory is retained with those yet replaced and passed on down the line. But "me" still knows things I did 8yr ago

Good points Randall. I like to think of our bodies as a computer hardware and "we" are really the software. Like the mind and body an empty hard drive weighs the same thing as one loaded with data, yet that data (analogizing to a soul) means everything as far as function and value.

Funny how I have been through 5 of these 7 year replacements and things are still firing the same way. Still an artist, still a joker and (according to my wife) still a pain in the butt. Maybe in 7 more years I'll become an accountant or... LOL Great vid Randall, as usual!
