  • I'm sure there's a specific point or method they are trying to teach here -- but in terms of a solution, if you already have the 3 factored out on the left side, why bother to distribute (multiply) it? Divide both sides by 3, giving 1 - 2x = -3; subtract 1 from each side, giving -2x = -4; divide both sides by 2, giving x = 2. 3 steps either way, but my way is arguably easier.
