Blogunner, Nearly Crushed by The New York Times, is Integrated into Paper's Editorial Strategy

Phlippe Lourier is the French programmer who created the Annotated New York Times, an algorithm that indexes New York Times stories and related discussions. It was cool, but unauthorized. Lawyers at paper considered suing him, according to New York Times reporter Saul Hansell, but "cooler heads prevailed," he told me.

Philippe and his Blogrunner company were acquired by The Times in 2005. Philippe has been hard at work implementing Blogrunner on the technology section which just introduced Blogrunner.

It's been getting some good notices including The Guardian's Jack Schofield.

Earlier this week I interviewed Saul. He is the editor of Bits and has played a central role in the integration of Blogrunner into the tech section. This is the third and final installment of my three interviews with him.
