In the 1950's and '60's, the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) created an almost continuous 4-mile long, two block wide high-rise ghetto from north of Cermak Rd.(22nd St.) to Garfield Blvd.(55th St.).

Over the last few years, the southernmost highrises, Stateway Gardens and Robert Taylor Homes, have been turned into giant vacant lots. Redevelopment is coming, slowly. Luxury condos are pushing from the north, where the CHA's Hilliard Homes have been rehabbed and turned into mixed-income buildings.

In this drive south from Roosevelt, you can see the close proximity of high and low-income areas on the near south side.

  • why are the streets so dead??

  • It was New Year's Day. For commuting, it would be great if it was like this all the time;-)

  • driving right into the ghetto...

  • Actually, it's the safest it's been in 45 years. And what they're building to replace the projects is basically what was there before the projects were built. The ones at 35th Street, just south of IIT, start at a quarter of a million dollars. They better hope the housing slump doesn't last.

  • This is fabulous. I hope you'll be inspired to do more like this. How about doing south on Michigan and west on Roosevelt from the Loop?

  • You read my mind. Roosevelt from the Dan Ryan to State Street is already up on YouTube; Michigan south of the Loop and Roosevelt west of the Ryan will have to wait till some of this snow melts -- hopefully within the next week or so:-)

  • i hear all this talk about chicagos ghettos. but that dont look any different then seattles ratty parts. i understand seattles ghetto is much much smaller then chicagos tho

  • yea all these wanna be gangstas from differnet city's wanna act like they hard and tough.....but aint got no heart up in the CHI.

  • How many boys in the hood went to IIT? It was right in their backyard. Preparation plus opportunity equal sucess. Shoot out to 63th and Dorchester St. I never look back

  • @ArtGaul Yeah putting them in suburbs was a bad idea, thats why decent suburbs like Country Club Hills, Sawk Village, Aurora, Bolingbrook, Joliet, Justice is Now messed up. Now, they're kicking the section 8s out of Joliet, Bolingbrook and Aurora because of crimes rates gone up after placing project niggas there.

  • @973akamurdaville Nah man, Chicago is now worser than Detroit (My hometown)

  • @ranus69 From 22nd(Cermak) to 52nd on State St has been dead for within 5 years now. All the projects have been bulldozed and the last ones by Cermak are like 1 left now which it called "The Ikies", but its about to come down. Yeah Its Ghost Town at night like Gary Ind.

  • Where are the people??? It's looks so dead and empty. I live in NYC and even in our pj's you will see people out. This just looks dead and not the Chicago I remember back in the 80's.
