I Give God My Marriage...And He Gives Me Something New.
God's Gift Exchange -- Part 3
December 16th, 2007
James 4:1-3

"A home filled with strife and division destroys itself." Mark 3:25 (LB)

"...God raises the dead to life and creates new things."
Romans 4:17b (CEV)

I. What Causes Conflicts?
James 4:1-3
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

"Do you know where your fights and arguments come from? They come from the selfish desires that war within you." James 4:1 (NCV)

"My Way" "No Way" "Your Way" "Half Way" "Our Way"

II. How Do We Pull Together After We've Pulled Apart?

1. Ask God For Help.

"You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God." James 4:2b (NIV)

2. Realize My Part In The Problem

"Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye but don't notice the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." Matthew 7:3, 5 (HCSB)

3. Be Intentional About Solving Issues

"If you remember someone has something against you, leave your gift at the altar and go at once to make peace... Then come back and offer your gift to God." Matthew 5:23-24 (GN)

4. Stop The Abusive Language

"Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. " Ephesians 4:29 (NLT)

"You must quit being angry, hateful, and evil. You must no longer say insulting or cruel things about others. And stop lying to each other. You have given up your old way of life with its habits." Colossians 3:8b-9 (CEV)

5. Place Yourself In Their Shoes.

"We must bear the "burden" of being considerate of the doubts and fears of others..." Romans 15:1-2 (LB)

"Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." Philippians 2:4 (NIV)

6. Focus On Reconciling, Not Resolving.

 "Reconciliation" - to reestablish the relationship
 "Resolution" - to resolve every issue

"The wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere." James 3:17 (NLT)

"Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful." Col. 3:15 (NKJV)
