why do some people use bmx bikes for this and some use mountain bikes?

I have a question, what is the difference between a dirt-bike and a freeriding bike?
Cause from what I have seen both can be used for jumping.

A "Dirt Jumper" is typically a hard tail that is a very robust design, a heavy dudty, but relatively short travel fork. An example would be the Santa Cruz Jackal. A freebike is usually (not always) a dual suspension bike with a bike fork. An example there would be either a Santa Cruz Bullit or their new Driver-8.
