On December 31, 2008, the leaders of the government coalition in Iceland met at Hotel Borg in downtown Reykjavík for the filming of the anual live television broadcast in which the events of the past year were discussed.
Approximately 200 demonstrators gathered nearby at Stjórnarráðið (Office of the Prime Minister) to protest the current economic and political situation in Iceland. This video demonstrates what happened after the peaceful protesters marched over to Hotel Borg. What transpired in front of the Hotel was not planned. A small portion of the demonstrators entered the back of the Hotel and stopped the live broadcast. After a confrontation with the police, several protesters were sprayed with tear gas. Approxmately 20 people required medical assistance, and three demonstrators were arrested. While this ensued, the rest of the demonstrators remained peacefully protesting across the street from the Hotel.
The recent wave of protests is the first in Iceland since 1949.
