A few days before the US Repack" riders in California celebrate the 35th anniversary of their first downhill mountain bike race, "English mountain bike" pioneer, Geoff Apps, revisits the forests where he developed his own bicycle designs in the 1960s and 70s.
Unlike the US pioneers, this was not a race against the clock, but a test of rider skill and bike reliability in the often wet and muddy forest conditions. A game of "Follow my leader" on a bicycle. Whilst the activities of the US pioneers grew into the global phenomenon of "Mountain Biking", Geoff Apps' bikes and style of riding remained unique to a small group of enthusiasts in the UK. However, many of Apps' innovations live on. His most famous being the creation of a 700c off-road bike or 29er, in 1981. The tires used were sent to Gary Fisher and Charlie Kelly in the US and so planted an idea that links to Gary Fisher Bicycles being the first of the major manufactures to offer a line of 29" bikes in 2004.
