Though some brands of clay can be soft and sticky if you use Promo brand clay you will find it works very well. This is the type of clay my Silly Millie's are made of.

Not to worry- use a white barrel bic pen and it will not melt.

They are canes. I don't know where you could get them in the UK. A lot of craft stores in the US sell them ready to cut, or you can buy polymer clay and mix colors yourself and do solid colors, stripes, or random "marble" type patterns. You can also find tutorials on caning online.
