Wow! You Cheated on a 78 rpm *** I was a record collector in the 50s and 60s, mostly R&B, doowop, and Motown. My first two purchased records were 78s in '56...Peggy Sue and Blue Suede Shoes (still got em).
I listened mostly to KDIA in San Francisco/Oakland back in the day. If I liked a new song, I bought it. Hence you may discover some great songs as we go on this journey. Remember, just because it wasn't a hit doesn't mean it wasn't a great song.

  • Great- I'd love to have this on 78.

this is a great reverse cover-

original was by a white group-

    the Slades

  • As a witness, I remember them out at the same time. It just created confusion because the Shields was the mega hit, but the Slades name was floating around.I suspect few people ever heard the Slades version at all. But your right, technically the Shields was a cover.

  • Thank You Very Much For Sharing These Wonderful Songs! Was This Out On 78 In The US,Or Is It Canadian Only?

  • I don't know, but 78s were dying out fast in 58 in the US. I personally know of none in 59 or later.

  • @srercrcr

I actually found a U.S. pressing of this on Tender records about a year and a half ago on Ebay

  • @glennmillerfan A 78?

  • I bought this and Little Star by the Elegents the same day in the late summer of 58. The year of one gem after another. never knew of the Slades version, and i have to say after hearing it several times the Shields win hands down!!!

  • @MultiBudboy

I have the Tender 78rpm version, but mine does not say "Distributed Exclusively By Dot" on it.

  • @srercrcr

Yes, I bought it on Ebay for $58. It is an extremely worn copy though.

  • NOT only was this a Dot 78, this was also a 78 on he original "Tender" label. In two forms - one said "Distributed Exclusively By Dot", one ith no mention of Dot. The original was more rockabillyish. It has been said Jesse Belvin is in the background. No matter what the classic status, this guy is OFF key.

I found a U.S. pressing 78rpm record of this on tender records a couple of months ago

  • Rene Hall strumming that guitar...

  • I have the Dick Clark special 45, with this & 5 other songs on it--what a collectors iten it is! I was so blown away by this song when I 1st heard it, 11 y/o, 6th grade in Denver--AM 1630 KOSI ---what times they were. This was a slow-dance special. Wolfsky9, 64 y/o
