More than 1 million gallons of oil may have spilled into a major river in southern Michigan after a 30-inch pipeline in Marshall burst Monday, the Environmental Protection Agency now estimates.
The EPA released the update Wednesday evening shortly after Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm criticized efforts to contain oil flowing into Talmadge Creek, which runs into the Kalamazoo River.
Workers using suction hoses try to clean up an oil spill of approximately 800,000 gallons of crude oil from the Kalamazoo River Tuesday in Battle Creek, Michigan. A 30 inch-wide underground pipeline owned by Calgary, Alberta-based Enbridge Energy Partners LP, began leaking Monday. CAPTIONBy Bill Pugliano, Getty ImagesGranholm warned of a "tragedy of historic proportions" if the oil reaches Lake Michigan, which is at least 80 miles downstream from where oil has been spotted, the Associated Press reports.
"The last thing any of us want to see is a smaller version of what has happened in the Gulf," Granholm said Wednesday. "From my perspective the response has been anemic."

  • Whatever happened to local governments taken responsiblity to take quick action when a disaster strikes? 30 years ago the local civilian governments would have had Volunteers like nearby farmers, police or firefighters on the spot within hours trying to contain the problem. Today they wait for the bureaucracy or Feds to tell them what to do, a day or two later. How Sheeple we have become. :-(

  • SOLIDSTEELEDOTCOM What difference does it make, nothing ....Nothing will be done, I live in Arizona, if I lived there I would be out doing this my self, damn the threat of arrest, "the people" need to take responsibility for the shit that effects their environment. same goes for the gulf "WE THE PEOPLE" need to stand up and correct these situations. this is how this country came to be... the people stood up and made it happen.. we didn't wait for uncle same to make it happen.

    on my lastreport

  • SOLIDSTEELEDOTCOM A: stretch and secure 100ft of chain link fence across the river from bank to bank.B: form a pulley close line system across the riverC: use a porous fabric like car carpet to absorb the oilI have researched the carpet, and it adsorbs very well but still allows for water pass flow, comes in rolls the same size as chin link fence 4ft by 1,2,300 ft rolls.

finally change the sheeting out as viscosity warrants.

If you can trace the flow at each bridge, this can be contained.

  • Who is this dumbass who reads clips of printed news and thinks he knows better than oil specialists? I never heard of Enbridge before, but obviously its officials have their act together. Of course it's popular to try to make political hay by declaring what a tragedy this is. Go ahead, stand on a bridge and drop in a piece of carpet. When it fouls up the equipment used by people who know what they're doing, see who else you can blame.
