wait!! so with that in mind, i'll be able to create my flying creature, even though it will only "fly" a few inches off the ground.

You see, it is floating because if you neglect to put legs on a creature then the game will treat it as a "slug". That being said, because the arms were below the body, the body must be elevated to keep the arms from going into the ground. So as a result, you have a floating slug that appears to be walking on its elbows. Simply an oversight on the part of the developers.
