I was a part of an incredible wedding ceremony this weekend. In addition to performing custom-created close-up magic for guests during cocktails and a short show with the happy couple, I actually officiated the ceremony. This was no ordinary wedding. The entire event, held at Casa Loma here in Toronto, was an Alice in Wonderland themed costume ball. As over 200 guests, dressed in assorted fineries looked on, the orchestra began playing the music from Disney's Haunted Mansion ride. The bride and groom - Cory Doctorow and Alice Taylor - weaved through the tables to join me by the head table. I spread my arms wide, took a deep breath and recited Jabberwocky, the bizarre poem from Alice's Adventures Through the Looking Glass, as though I were delivering the sermon and performing the ceremony. At the conclusion of the poem, Cory and Alice recited their quirky and funny and touching vows. Then, in a flash of fire, I made the custom-made secret decoder wedding bands appear and the ceremony was over.
I was truly honored to be a part of such a special event for two special people and their families. Two people joined together in a marriage the way it's meant to be - surrounded by the people who love them most on a night they'll never forget. That's magic indeed.
