its not "beer" until fermentation is complete

that's not true. what about 'priming' when bottling? that continues fermentation. wort is fermented beer. beer begins to ferment when yeast is added. there may not be a lot of alcohol, but it happens immediately. you can debate when it is drinkable beer, but it's beer once yeast is added.

I'm a newbie. Where is a good place online to get hops and the malt extract as well? The home brew place where I live is just a grow shop I think.

Hey, thanks for subscribing! You're best bet is to just Google a homebrew shop in your area. Not sure where you are located, but Williams is a good place, look for it online. Cheers!
