The breakwater in Long Beach is the focus of a heated debate between the folks that want it demolished and the folks that want it left alone. The city's coast is well known for its pollution -- and the breakwater, which is a pile of rocks designed to weaken natural ocean swells, is one of the main culprits.
With the demolition, or reconfiguration of the wall the surf can return and begin the cleaning process. Unfortunately, the waves may endanger the property along the peninsula and the swells may disrupt the work on the oil islands resting just inside the protected area.
