the aria was written to display beautiful coloratura singing many singers today try to go for more drama but thats not how it was sung at the time as there are recordings of singers who sang it at the time it was written and none of them display ugly notes to create drama and poor trills as the sopranos of today jennifers trills are very good the trill seems to have to disapeared in todays singing
I saw this production back in the eighties the australian opera was hoping she would replace sutherland when she retired she had a rather small voice but I love the timbre this is how the aria should be sung if you here great soprono's like melba and garden she also looks the part
my name is jennifer mcgregor how wierd is that. well my maiden name is anyway. i was born jennifer marie mcgregor and just found out that i have two name sake's. one is a artist and the other is a actor.
thanks so much for posting this. It's from an Australian Opera production at the Sydney Opera House. Sherrill Milnes was Hamlet and Richard Bonynge conducted.
She certainly has the pipes for the aria, but I have to agree with dutchtallguy that I'm not a fan of her timbre. I do like what she does with it though.

To be honest: I don't like the timbre and vibrato. It sounds cold.
