This is just a short clip of his fight with Oscar Cardenas that shows how quick the referees are calling matte, and ruining the beauty of Judo newaza, even though there was evident progress being done on the ground.

  • He is trying to go to the ground and not letting the match naturally progress. He should do jiujitsu not judo.

  • @sonomama82 This is so ironic coming from someone which nickname is the exact command that referees shout to FREEZE the fight :-)

09:00 - Canto applied tomoe-nage, Oscar broke the grip and still was unbalanced, canto moved swiftly into attacking in newaza. stupid referee called matte.

00:20 - Oscar fell by itself to avoid being thrown. stupid referee called matte (should have penalized Oscar)

00:32 - Canto scored with hikikomi-gaeshi, moved to tate-shiho-gatame. Stupid referee called matte

  • I've responded with my analysis of the fight which shows that Canto was the one attacking both in tachiwaza and newaza (I have to whole fight at home, and I can say Canto was much more aggressive the whole fight!). The only conclusion I can have is that you don't like Canto, and dislike BJJ (despite being, at the core, Judo, as Maeda was never a JJ guy, he was a Kodokan judoka), so you make an unfounded comment thinking it shows knowledge of Judo, while it lacks everything...

  • @loudenvier I like BJJ a lot. Its a super effective fighting style. Sonomama means just like that. I never said I was a Judo expert. Have a great life.

  • @sonomama82 I've seen your profile after responding... If I had seen it earlier I would have responded less sourly... :-) But then you've stated as if it was as fact that Canto was trying to avoid the fight going into newaza (which is an integral part of Judo, and two competitors, could, in principle, chose to enter newaza directly if that was mutual, as long as progress never stops - differently from BJJ), and Canto, was, in fact dominating both tachiwaza and newaza so it was an injustice :-)

  • The purpose of this video was to show that even with progress going on in newaza the current IJF interpretations don't allow it to come to fruition. This is SAD! Judo had so many newaza masters in the past (Tsunetane Oda, Isao Okano, Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki, Yasuhiro Yamashita, Yoshiro Okuda and others) that I think it to be disrespectful to diminish its role in current Judo competition. Best wishes!

  • in my judo gym we learn and spend just as much time on newaza as we do throwing techniques. if anything BJJ has weaker takedowns than judo

  • @jimmy1t Hi bro! This is the deal, newaza is a fundamental part of Judo. The problem is that referees today are lame judoka who don't understand newaza. They don't know how to recognize progress in newaza... And I must say not even in tachiwaza as they will call matte all the time even though progress is being made towards a throw. Leg grabs is another issue entirely: it is incompetence of Judoka who don't know how to do judo that let drag-downs work on them, the greats of judo never had problem

  • thats such BS. Half of Judo is supposed to be newaza.

  • I have found this myself. Such a shame that the judo rules are being made so much to restrict good oldskool judo. The pick up rule stinks too!

  • @sonomama82 this ref blows...

  • @EricRyanCronin if your lucky to train at the right place ;-)

  • @jayminho Eh, good schools and bad schools. Where I train we do at least as much newaza as tachi waza. But, I think that "BJJ" is the best thing that ever happened to Judo. I suspect with the growing popularity of "BJJ" more and more Judo schools will be teaching newaza.
