  • Say I wanted to make one of these in my basement. What would be the volume of compost needed to create a constant flame hot enough to boil water? Also i know the compost-to-methane process takes like 3 weeks, but if i can keep restocking the container keeping it airtight couldnt (or how could) i get a constant flame hot enough to consistently boil water? Almost 24/7?

  • @jjustin25 that sounds like a death trap to me.. it takes 3 weeks for the system to start and you will get about 50 ltrs of gas a day.. how much water? i would think you would need about 20 drums to keep 5ltrs of water boiling probably more. i think waste oil would be better for that

  • do you think this would work with nothing more than dog crap , i must get 1 kilo a day from the kennels .

  • @mutantmongol you would need to add some kind of carbon to the mix, veggie scraps would work

  • What does this look like in the end? After ? and can I have your permission on using this as our science fair project but we are doing a small scale project of this. So can we use it?

  • @pweze999 you mean the whole setup or the gas? i am yet to finish it as the tank did not last long from the SO2. but yeah you can use it all you like.. i just ask that you credit me if you use the video, if you want to build one then just go nuts.. it will take about a month to get into full production

  • Or if your in America "uniseal " make a simple rubber grommet that seals the pipe .

Took me days of searching to find this info for connecting larger diameter pipes to tanks ,didnt even realise they were called "tank connectors" and all the plumbing supplies only do upto 32mm tank connectors.

Would like to see further progressive videos of yours and thanks for sharing your progress so far.

  • For automated mixing I'am circulating the gas from the top valve back through the digester near the bottom,

I have also made a simple waste motor oil burner from an old propane cylinder and some 4 inch metal pipe .

With air pump from a scrap cars heater system to blow air into it.It burns hot and clean. The garages give me the oil so it makes it cheap to keep the digester at the correct temperature 37 degrees.

You can get the 4 inch tank connectors to seal the 4inch pipe from pond suppliers

  • I have made a similar digester.

A couple of differences are, That my 4 inch pipe has a 180 degree bend on the bottom inside the tank, I dont need a tight lid on the top as the bend traps the gas in the tank,Also as the gas is produced it pushes the fluid up the pipe and the gas stays trapped in the top of the drum.

On top i have connected a 9 inch from 4 inch adapter connector, this makes it easy to fill and adds pressure ,but eliminates the chance of the drum popping.
