I picked up an import of Pulp Fiction. The truth about the contents of the briefcase was finally revealed!

the only real thing that was in that suitcase was a light bulb.
as far as what its suppose to be....tarantino and others left it up to speculation on purpose...its just a plot device.

No where does it say that when the devil takes your soul he takes it from the back of your head. Tarantino and the producer decided that the contents of the case would never be specified and that it would be whatever the viewer decided it would be. Quote "No prop master can come up with something better than each individual's imagination." Then one person decided to put a lightbulb inside the case which is now a decision regretted by Tarantino and Roger Avary. There is no right or wrong answer.
