Torturing somebody is terrible for a punishment. It's crazy and difficult to understand what goes on in people's minds when they reach that point and snap, but he was obviously very psychologically distressed. Causing him serious pain wouldn't mend anything, just create more pain. But he should be punished, locked away or something just for the safety of the other children and himself.
