The Chicago Urban League presented Summit 2011: Accelerating the Economic Recovery on Tuesday, April 12 at the Hilton Chicago. The keynote speaker was Marc H. Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, and former mayor of the City of New Orleans. Morial discussed the National Urban League's annual State of Black America report that focuses on economic recovery and the future of jobs in America. Andrea L. Zopp, president and CEO, Chicago Urban League, also weighed in on the economic recovery and presented the findings from the Chicago Urban League's latest policy and research report and its recommendations. Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley was on hand to remind that crowd that the recession is not over no matter what they say in Washington. He also addressed the importance of education and told the crowd to have the courage to improve education.
The luncheon featured a panel discussion on job creation opportunities and workforce investment. Panelists included Cheryl Hyman, Chancellor, City Colleges of Chicago; Warren Ribley, Director, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity; and Shelley Stern, Citizenship Director, Microsoft Corporation. The panel was moderated by ABC 7 Chicago anchor Cheryl Burton.
