ZHANG:
Some good news to start out todays broadcast. An ongoing conflict has come to an end between Thailand and Cambodia over a temple on the border of the two countries. Heres the story.

STORY:
The Preah Vihear temple, or Khao Phra Viharn as it is known in Thailand, sits on an escarpment that forms the natural border between the two countries and has been a source of tension for generations.

The International Court of Justice awarded it to Cambodia in 1962, but the ruling did not determine the ownership of 4.6 sq km of adjoining scrubland, leaving considerable scope for disagreement.

Thai and Cambodian troops have manned the area in a tense standoff.

The row intensified last year when Cambodia won United Nations approval for the temple to become a world heritage site and Thailand feared it was losing ground.

Four soldiers died in a shoot out last October during what became an eight month armed stand off.

However now the two countries say they have agreed to put their differences behind them and work together over the issue.

At a meeting of the Cambodia's prime minister, Hun Sen and Thailand's defense minister if was agreed that both sides will withdraw troops and seek to de-mine the area.

[Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia]:
"I think we can accept the agreement that there are no troops in the area around Preah Vihear pagoda and temple. We also agree to create a temporary task force to de-mine together in that area and also create a border committee to determine the border demarcation. So I think that area is no longer an area where there is confrontation by the two armies."

They will jointly develop the area as a tourist site.

Foreign tourists have started returning to Preah Vihear temple.
