Entry from: Ryttylä , Finland
Entry Title: "Ryttyl"

Entry:

"We drove to Ryttylä which is about an hours drive north from Jarvenpaa to visit friends from their PNG days, Soini & Kaija , who we met when they came to Cairns either on holidays or medical visits, more often the latter. Andrew & Kerthy were kind enough to loan us their car for the next month while they are on summer holiday in Cyprus. So Rina took to the wheel and my turn will come ... that will be fun as traffic is on the right side in this part of the world.

Soini & Kaija live only a stones throw away from one of the Finnish mission societies. We were taken for a personal tour through all the buildings because for Soini & Kaija it is like a second home. Since about 1969 it has been the home of Kansanlahetys, the base for a mission college, summer confirmation camps and home of many publications for different age groups. It is also a distribution centre for material that can be purchased online.

As we drove the last few kilometers to their home we passed this complex on our right and I immediately knew this was a place with history and my curiousity was satisfied when we were filled in by such a special tour. And it does have history.

Originally just a farming area this property began its growth in 1801 under the ownership of the Granfelt family who owned it for 75 years. It was then purchased by the wealthy Colonel Hugo Standertskjold ( Aulanko fame - same chap that built the lookout tower and beautiful gardens.) To him this property was just one along with many others and after selling it in early 1900's it was owned by a brickworks and then under the ownership of Helsinki City. The welfare department used it as a home for unemployed men who could be kept busy working the farm doing all that it included.

In 1923 when it came under Children's Welfare it became a home for boys who had difficulties in the normal primary school and 40 years later, when its location changed, the property was vacant for about 6 years. It then became the home of a Mission College and some years later became what it is today.

For me personally it was very interesting to see where many of the overseas mission workers are trained and I'm surprised at the number that Finland has for its small size."
