Vienna, Austria - 4.9.09

National controversy was caused by the decision of the Mayor of Vienna to hold a party to celebrate 30 years of Austrias first abortion clinic. The Pro-Woman clinic, which works under the guidelines of Marie Stopes International (MSI), claims to have killed over 300,000 babies during this time.
Pro-lifers yesterday, organized a demonstration outside the beautiful and historic neo-gothic Rathaus (City Hall) where the abortion event was scheduled to take place, musically underlined by a feminist jazz trio.
A non-governmental pro-life coalition, comprised of Human Life International, Tradition Family and Property, Doctors for Life, the Austrian political party Die Christen and others, were present in sizable numbers.
Over a hundred young people from the Youth for Life travelled across Austria to join the demonstration. The Centre for Bioethical Reform (Europe) based in neighboring Slovakia also attended.
Prior to the event a Holy Mass was celebrated by Bishop Andreas Laun, auxiliary bishop of Salzburg. He shocked worshippers by revealing that the Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, had prohibited him from attending the demonstration. Bishop Laun had been scheduled to speak at the demonstration and to lead prayers outside the City Hall, but Laun explained the Cardinal has phoned me and said that I am absolutely not allowed to attend the demonstration. Since he is the local archbishop, I have to obey according to canon law. Cardinal Schönborn did not give any reason for his ban, nor did he send anyone in Monsignor Launs place, a fact which caused much perplexity among the demonstrators.
Bishop Laun and Cardinal Schönborn recently clashed over yet another abortion clinic in Vienna when Laun declared a prominent businessman who allowed the clinic to open on his property to be excommunicated whereas Schönborn chose to defend him.
Participants from the Mass then processed singing 2.5 kilometers from the church to join the demonstrators already at the City Hall. In total about 500 pro-lifers and 300 pro-abortion counter-demonstrators were present separated by crowd control barriers and about one hundred police officers.
The pro-life campaign used a series of large billboards showing graphic images of aborted fetuses, juxtaposed with images of Mayor Michael Häupl, his city councilor for health, Sonja Wehsely, and the manageress of the abortion clinic, Elke Graf who organized the celebratory event. This was the first time such images were shown in the streets of Austria, shocking even the hardened pro-abortion agitators.
Speeches, prayers and songs made up the three hour demonstration. Many pro-lifers turned up in traditional Austrian clothing, like Dirndl, Loden jackets and Lederhosen, typical for alpine Austria. Candles were placed by children on the ground near the entrance to the City Hall in remembrance of the countless victims of abortion, as well as the broken hearts of women suffering under Post Abortion Syndrome (PAS). A little girl took the podium to thank her mother for having let her be born.
The pro-abortion demonstrators were infuriated and spent their time insulting, whistling, blaspheming and throwing water-filled condoms and eggs at the pro-lifers and their billboards. Such behaviour was counterproductive since the police pushed the pro-abortionists back away from the City Hall.
Mood in the rat hole of the municipal offices cellar was muted, many politicians and other VIPs chose not to attend the event which had created so much controversy. Abortion clinic staff, feminist activists and socialist politicians who did turn up, looked aghast at the images of abortion which they were forced to confront.
Rumor has it that the mayor, who did not make an appearance, spent the evening running up and down the Rathaus-corridors, peaking out the windows at the massed demonstrators, and railing furiously at his staff for not having informed him about the huge public concern his decision to hold the jubilee party had caused.

  • bitte niiiiiiieeemals abtreiben.
