This beginner-level tutorial shows how to insert an image using WordPress version 2.5 or later. Inserting an image using WordPress version 2.5 or 2.6 is slightly different than inserting an image using WordPress version 2.3 or earlier. Versions 2.5 and 2.6 are essentially the same. Version 2.6 is the latest version as of July 2008.

Inserting an image that you have already uploaded to WordPress but haven't used in a particular post or page is actually a bit confusing in version 2.5 or later. You need to be able to find the elusive "Insert into Post" button. It's not obvious.

There are many other settings and features in the "Add media" tools in the WordPress editing interface. This tutorial covers only the most basic aspects of uploading and inserting an image.

  • in making website. i have problem in upload image(wordpress). wordpress says "Unable to create directory /home/a1096608/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2010/03. Is its parent directory writable by the server?".what does it mean?. thanks for your help.

The short answer is that you need to set the permissions for the wp-content directory to 755 or higher, sometimes 777. Ask your web host tech support. They should be able to help.

  • There is no "insert into post" button !

  • Make sure you are using the Insert Image button while editing a specific page or post. The "Insert into Post" button is there under the different size options for the image.

In WordPress 2.8 you have three options for image insertion: upload an image from your computer; select an image from the Gallery (images you have already uploaded); or insert a "gallery" of images (a group of images you upload together from your computer).

  • alexosh1234,

    Thanks for your question.

First, make sure the imaage is in one of the supported file formats like JPG or GIF or PNG. (Let me know if you need to know how to check that.)

Be sure to click SAVE CHANGES or INSERT INTO POST before leaving the Insert Image dialog box.

Are you using the Insert Image button or something else to upload?

Are you using WordPress version 2.5 / 2.6 or are you using something earlier?

  • Question- I have no problem uploading an image to an individual post, but no image shows up in my "featured posts" section at the top of my blog. There is a white box indicating that's where an image would go, but no image shows up. Is there an additional step that a user has to take to insert an image into featured posts, that I am missing?

  • i still don't no how to upload a picture

  • I have uploaded a JPG which I can see in my gallery but there is no "insert into post" button and "save all changes" doesn't seem to do anything. No matter what I do I can't seem to get my image to go into my post! I have done it before, but now it beats me.
