When Xcom was released for the Playstation, Microprose took advantage of the storage space of the new medium and created new , custom Mpeg movies for use in the game. They did not decide to stay entirely with 2d art, but they did reuse the original game's art where they could and threw in new 3 dimensional characters wherever they were able to (as was the rage back then). This video explains the new videos and differences.
