My hair is naturally straight, so I don't know if you're supposed to straighten first. Sorry. For heat protecting spray, I usually use Chi 44 Iron Guard. You can find good heat protection products on folica.com

Well, it's easier for me to use flat iron because the curls are long lasting without a bunch of hair-setting products, but the curls can be a bit messy if you don't put same pressure to each section.

With curling iron, the curls dont last long for me also it takes much longer. The curls have to be clip up after it's curled so that the curls are set, and then wait until the curls are cooled down, and then apply hairsprays. which I don't like to do because i've to wash my hair on the same day that way, but the curls look nicer and more neat
