In captivity, regular health assessments of each dolphin is done. One way to assess the health of the animal is to collect samples. Urine, feces, stomach contents, milk, blood and semen are all collected for this purpose. To ensure the lowest level of stress is encountered when such samples are required to be collected, regular simulated collections are done with each animal. Here, the dolphin is asked to present flukes. Running along the ventral (under) side of the flukes is a vein from which blood may be drawn. In a simulated collection, the flukes are wiped with an iodine-saturated gauze patch and finger pressure is applied to the vein to simulate a blood draw.
