Sonata No.17 in D major, D.850 (op. 53), composed in August 1825 when Schubert was on a holiday in Gastein; dedicated to the well known pianist Karl Maria von Bocklet.
A year later in 1826 when Schubert was 29 years old, it became only the second of his piano sonatas to be published under the name "Seconde Grande Sonate".
Schubert died in 1828 at 31 years of age, having only three of his piano sonatas published in his lifetime.

I think changes of pace are necessary for this Schubert masterpience to achieve
a maximum combination of clarity and emotional expressiveness. Richter deserves credit as an early pioneer of Schubert piano music.
