  • Hi SuperRedskins

Great stuff - you must have gardener's genes with a Grandad like that. Hope your spuds taste good.

    Thanks for the comment

  • Hi ayenab

The potato leaves do flop down, so don't worry. You should harvest the potatoes if the leaves start to die back, go brown or get disease. Otherwise harvest them when you think they are big enough. Have a little look, like we did in the video, without damaging the spuds. Just gently brush some soil away to see how big the potatoes are. Keep a look out for slugs or anything else that may eat them. If they are being nibbled, get in there & take them before anything else does!

  • Im a first time gardener. I'm going to use raised beds. How high should the bed be to accomodate the potatoes/roots/etc???? Some say 12". Some say 4" What do you recommend???

  • @learningartagain Hi- you will need a good 12" to stop the potatoes going green. Is the raised bed on top of soil? If so, the roots will be able to grow down into that , so you will be OK with 12"

  • @topvegetables Let us know how you get on - we will be interested to hear which varieties you grow & how they do in raised beds

  • isnt the potaotes ready 2 weeks after they bloomed? sorry me stupid question ,but this is when i normally takes me pot up......

  • @MRTHATSFAKEANDGAY - thanks for viewing! The spuds are ready when they are big enough for you...Flowering depends on variety - but if yours are good 2 weeks after flowering - great . No stupid questions when it comes to gardening - there is always so much to learn! What variety are yours?

  • Hi mate i love your vid i wanted to ask a question i have spoke to my parents about harvesting my potato's and they said you should wait till the flowers die off but then i looked on youtube and some ppl say to wait till the hole plant starts to wither now i don't no what to do as there still lovely and green quite big plants too some have flowered and some not the flowers just fall off when you touch them even lightly can you please help me to determine when i should start digging thanks simon

  • Great video and advice! This is the way to go... never mind the EU and their poisonous plans! My Granddad grew all his own grub and lived to 90! He'd pick his potatoes in October and they'd last right through until April! The rubbish in the supermarket lasts about a week! I've grown some potatoes in plastic bags this year, for the first time. They're looking good! I planted them on first April - I reckon they will be ready in the next week or two.I shall now check them as you suggest! Thanks!

  • Very helpful, thank you.
