Carolina Crafting visits the rather odd but fun tradition of holding a Possum Drop on New Years Eve in Brasstown, NC. "A Southern Thing", the drop (more like a lowering) of the possum at the stroke of midnight is preceded by a "Womanless Beauty Pageant" a "Hillbilly Rodeo" and much singing and merriment. Clay Logan, owner of "Clay's Corner" has organized and MC'd this event for the past 15 years.

A terrifying and disorienting experience for animal—and is reportedly confined to a retail store until the event. During the "drop," the frightened animal will be subjected to a screaming crowd, fireworks, and the firing of muskets, which can damage her sensitive hearing and respiratory system. It's no wonder that eyewitnesses have reported that opossums used in previous years were shaking in fear.
