DSM's Director of Systems Integration speaking about cost containment. (Transcript below)
A lot of customers are asking about cost containment. Some of the ways that DSM can help you is, for example, power management. A lot of people dont realize that it costs 100 dollars a month to power a server and in addition to powering a server, you have to cool it. In many cases that can be another 50 to 100 dollars depending upon how sophisticated your cooling environment is. Bottom line is if you have 10 servers at 100 dollars a month just in powering alone it can very easily cost about a thousand dollars.
More elements that are an issue is on the desktop. It costs roughly a dollar a day to power a desktop. A lot of people feel like they have power management or control on the desktop but the reality is in most cases they dont. A simple audit in many cases can help you determine that, but at a dollar a day on a desktop and youve got a thousand desktops, you can see the savings can be tremendous over a years period.
Another way we can help you is in the form of virtualization. A lot of our clients today think that quite frankly they are too small and virtualization is for enterprisewe only have a handful of servers and we dont really see how that is going to help. Whether you have 100 servers, 10 or five, virtualization can really save money in a number of areas. It can save you in the management of the infrastructure as well as the provisioning of new equipment as well as from a recovery prospective, give you faster recovery times. So dont feel like just because you have five servers virtualization may not be a fit for you.
Another way clients take advantage of [DSM] is via our data center. Lets say you have ten or 15 platforms you have going in their environment and they all have reached the end of life. What do I have to do if I have to buy five or 10 new servers it comes at a capital expenditure of several thousand dollars. In many cases people will virtualize basic application and host them on our virtual infrastructure so that there is no money that has to be expended in the form of hardware. There is still time to set it up and in essence that set capital expenditure is no longer required.
An additional area that a lot of people are finding they need help in is when they find themselves in the situation where they have to let people go or they dont have the right skill in their environment and they cant afford to hire a CIO. We have this virtual employee offering that we offer today that is very different than what we have offered in the past. It allows us to bill by the month versus by the hour and we can provide as much or a little service as our client needs. This goes from the CIO all the way down to the help desk. As an example you may have a firewall or network engineer that you may be paying 45K a year, plus benefits on top of that and you can no longer afford to pay him. In many cases we can do the same work for about 25-30 thousand a year depending on scope. Within that, we can move very detailed lists of what well be doing throughout the week and month even daily tasks so that you know exactly what is being performed. Well give you CIO reports so you can see where you are today and it will help you realign your business with your IT infrastructure. Also having the right skills and having good project management. We find that project management is one area that a lot of people go into a project but dont spend adequate enough time planning and therefore at the end of the project they end up spending more money than they thought they would have or having the right skills for the job. In a lot of cases people are interested in virtualization and take someone who is not trained in that area: they read a book, go online and then try to deploy it and often times the deployment has holes in it and doesnt run as efficiently as it could or may have performance issues.
Regardless of what type of issues you may be encountering today I believe that we can have as short as a five minute conversation to determine if we can help you save money in this economy.
