Trying to figure out why my 302 is running rich and idling poorly. My timing light on the #1 shows nothing, neither does the #6. The vacuum is disconnected, the timing shows up on the #4 as shown in the video. A quick rev of the glasspack stock exhaust with gutted pre cat/removed main cat (Both were inoperable)

  • thats just a vacuum hose my freind

  • Did you discard the Duraspark box? Also, the Duraspark distributor connector can develop resistance (corrosion) and cause misfires. The HEI/Duraspark conversion works excellent.

  • first off..dont make any timing adjustments to a cold motor..let it run till it is up to temp and choke wide open ..it seems like it is still on fast idle so you cant make a timing adjust like that ..is it a new carb or did someone rebuild it?.was float lever checked?

with it idling this fast your timing will look like it is off.did you disconnect the vac advance? if on fast idle and vac advanced still hooked up it will give you a rong reading of timing..this is an easy fix

  • Hey man if you still havent figured this out yet, go to the Fullsizebronco website and there you can get alot of help.....I know its a bronco website, but alot of 150's post there because they're basically the same....so give 'em a shot, look for "Sixlitre", he's one of the bronco gods. lol.

  • its an 85- has 100K+ miles-cant find timing mark for two reasons: 1. The timing chain is stretched--as it does so, camshaft timing gets retarded and since cam drives the distributor ignition timing is now retarded. The timing mark is there REST ASSURED! 2. wire harness to distributor has to be disconnected(buy a manual) 3. idle has to be 600 rpm AND choke must be open; REPLACE vacuum hose to choke pull-off; set choke plate to spec's. LOOK IN THE MANUAL FOR SETTINGS--DON'T EXCEED SPECS

  • "My timing light on the #1 shows nothing, neither does the #6."

Is that to say that your timing light doesn't flash when connected to either of these two wires?

    -Kurt

  • What do you mean it shows nothin? Timing has to be checked and adjusted with the timing light on #1 spark plug wire.

The choke isnt opened all the way so thats probably one problem.
