죽은 이의 영혼을 위로하다 '진도 씻김굿'

진도에는 초상이 나면 그 마을에서 무당들이 초상집을 찾아가 밤새도록 씻김굿을 했습니다. 사람들은 굿을 하면 망자(죽은자)가 이승에서 풀지못해 맺혀있던 한을 풀고 깨끗이 씻겨 극락왕생할 수 있다고 믿었습니다. 가슴이 절절 끓는 살풀이 한 판을 하고 나면 죽은 영혼도, 살아 있는 사람들의 아픔도 조금씩 씻어내려갔겠지요. 2008 서울국악한마당 '신명'에서 선보인 진도 씻김굿을 담아봤습니다.

I lived in Korea a while ago. I really enjoyed this kind of music. I could imagine what it would have been like a long time ago. It also reminds me of Insadon Gil in Seoul. I loved to go there and have a cup of tea and listen to the old traditional music.

This is an awesome example of the spirtual tradition of old Korea. It is good to see that Koreans take pride in preserving those traditions. The vocals and instrumentals call upon the dead to leave this world, and ride on the clouds to the other side. Very powerful music. :)
