@agwhitaker In WWII, US subs were quite informal while on patrol. The Air Conditioning only went so far: It would lower the temperature 30 degrees............from 120 degrees to 90 degrees!!! It was mainly for dehumidification and, as this video shows, wasn't always available anyway.

I remember this show - when I was a little kid - I never missed them - but I forget the name of the Rear-Admiral (retired) who used to host the show. I remember the one show that one of the crewman had to undergo an appendectomy performed by the corpsman - there was no doctor on board. I thought it was great!
