Happy Birthday Chris

My life has been touched by death before, but never by someone this close. When Chris died the world felt wrong. Without Chris it seemed the world should stop. I stopped. Stuck in a place where loss surrounded me.

Searching for reasons, for signs, for something allowing me to go on. I kept; a lock of his hair, his clothes, his hat, his books, his ashes, his watch. Amulets to keep him near.

But sometimes there is no sign, no reason and nothing lessens the grief. I urge you at these times to remember yourself. Look in the mirror. See yourself. The memories of those we love are written into our beings. They are as much a part of what makes us as our DNA.

Do you have fond memories of someone no longer here? Do they make you smile or laugh? Do they lead to other memories that make you smile or laugh? In these thoughts, in these memories, in these moments where you imagine their face, their voice, their laugh or the feel of their hand in yours, you have become a celebration for them. You have become the place of honor, where they are kept safe and loved.

Share this smile with someone else, maybe just another person on the street, or the person ahead of you in line at the grocery store. By simply sharing this smile, even if you do not speak, you have shared the tale of the person that you love. Words are not necessary because YOU are the story.

We are the home for the people we love. We are their resting place. We are their living altar.
