Jose Montoya is no stranger utilizing the tool of nonviolent expression to create social change. After earning his MA, he taught in the Department of Art Education at CSU Sacramento for 27 years. The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Council appointed him as a Poet Laureate and has published several books of poetry.
While his academic career has created a new awareness of Chicano history, Montoya's activism is what he may be best known for. A founding member of the Royal Chicano Air Force, Montoya is part of an artists' collective internationally recognized for its mural and poster work, and for its synthesis of creative expression and community activism. The work of the RCAF was an effective and important piece of the labor rights movement that began in the agricultural areas of California in the 1960s and 70s.
Montoya remains one of the most influential bilingual Chicano poets. His story proves that inspiration fosters expression, which can result in excellence.
