Algren is the real deal: tough, compassionate, a fine prose stylist and committed to telling the truth. He is a noble inheritor of the Sherwood Anderson tradition, but harder-boiled, yet still with a romantic streak. Thanks for posting this interview -- I'd never seen film footage of him before. He has left too few inheritors. Chicago should celebrate his memory.
