So I come to the conclusion that it must have been a vision, A vision not while sitting on the bed. It was indeed a true vision, they were not daydreaming. They did travel on a ship, and the storm did blew the ship for 30 days until they came to an island. And it is the divine work of Allah (SWT), Tamim Dari and his companions saw what they saw, a vision designed, only they could see. And Allah knows Best.

So no one knew the true identity of ibn Sayyad... And in the same way no one can really tell if the encounter between Tamim Dari and Dajjal was a dream or vision. But If we look at the Hadith, Prophet (SA) says that, Tamim Dari became a Muslim after narrating this to him. Meaning he must have been a christian while meeting Dajjal.
So it is highly unlikely Prophet (SA) would have given any importance to a dream of a Christian man, not even Sahabas had ever dreamed about Dajjal.

Rasool SA: was reluctant regarding to ibn Sayyad, and was not certain whether he was the original Dajjal or not, due to the lack of Wahy' revelations from Allah in this respect.
So no one knew the true identity of ibn Sayyad... And in the same way no one can really tell if the encounter between Tamim Dari and Dajjal was a dream or vision.

There are things that cannot be explained unless Allah (SWT) allows. Even today no one could tell the true identity of Ibn Saiyad. – Narrated Muhammad bin Al-Munkadir:
I saw Jabir bin ‘Abdullah swearing by Allah that Ibn Sayyad was the Dajjal. I said to Jabir, “How can you swear by Allah?” Jabir said, “I have heard ‘Umar swearing by Allah regarding this matter in the presence of the Prophet and the Prophet did not disapprove of it.”

So why did Tamim Dari see Dajjal, and why can we not see him? This is by divine wisdom of Allah (SWT). He created the evil Dajjal to test mankind, He also gave us clues to survive the greatest trial that mankind will ever have to face.....

Go back to the Hadith Tamim Dari located in Sahih Muslim. Look into the conversation between Tamim Dari & Dajjal. Why did Dajjal say, it is to our benefit that we should listen to Prophet (SA)? He also said the Sea of Galilee will dry up soon. And this is happening now after 2000+ years when the Jews have returned to Jerusalem (21:95-96)to claim it as their own.
