Amstrad CPC - remake of R-Type (for 128k machines) EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW VIDEO!!

Hey guys I'm very excited to bring you a sneak peek preview video of the work done so far on the remake of the Amstrad port of R-Type!

(** PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ON AN EMULATOR, THINGS LOOK AND MOVE A LOT NICER ON A REAL AMSTRAD! **)

A long time ago, the Amstrad received the port of the legendary coin-op R-Type, it was OK but it was a rush job and was just completely ported from the (excellent) Speccy version. Very little enhancements were made, apart from workarounds to get it displaying correctly on the CPC, this resulted in further overheads and thus ended up being slower and far less impressive than the Spectrum original. The Easter Egg team began work on improving the game back in December 2009, now a year later you get to see their progress! What started out as just improving the graphics, sound effects and music, turned into a massive rewrite of the game improving and enhancing many aspects and introducing even more new stuff. The original Amstrad programmer Keith Goodyer even turned up on the CPC Wiki forums to assist and give his side of the story! Then Bob Pape the Spectrum version programmer came forward with some of his original code! That then became the base for this remake...

This is still the unfinished preview version bare in mind, but already we have an amazing improvement and a port all Amstrad fans can be proud of...

Enjoy!

  • I'm impressed by this work. Congrats guys!!

  • @norecess464 Easter Egg are a very talented team indeed :)

  • I'm flabbergasted !

At last CPC gets justice for those lazy Spectrum ports.

I really can't wait for the final version.

    Thanks for sharing mate.

  • @alex76gr My pleasure dude and glad you like so much! And there are more improvements to come .... plus just wait till you see the later levels!!

  • that's some feat to achieve this..fantastic work, I never had a CPC but might look into this when it's released, it's very close to the Atari ST version graphic wise, so amazing work on doing that.

  • @DDGreyfox Interestingly I believe the Speccy version had it's graphics ported over from the Atari ST version, now in a strange 'coming full circle' like these things happen it's now looking again like the ST version! LOL

  • @tcaudilllg

    Sure.

By playing it on a real CPC.

  • Would there be some way you could improve the frame rate?

  • This just makes me want to hunt down the coders behind the original CPC version and beat them to death with a baguette.

    Wicked stuff.

  • NOW AVAILABLE ON CPC.RTYPE.FR

  • The CPC 6128 was my first computer, and i also have many fond memories from it :-) And i am very happy to see the CPC getting justice for all those awful spectrum ports that we Amstrad users had to endure !

  • Impressive work mate!

The CPC 464 was my very fond computers and I have many fond memories of it ;-)

  • @EgoShredder Sure. :)
