Joffrey Ballet 1987 Rite of Spring (3 of 3)

The riot was not only over the absence of pink tutus. The music was symphonic (using a much larger orchestra than usual for ballet) - and discordent. Instead of willowy ballernias fluttering on tiptoe, here was calisthenic jumping, with arms akimbo and feet turned inward. The performers show no expression in their faces. None of those basic ballet positions or fluffy gowns, but angular movements and flannel chemises.

MY GOD!!!! this is truly MODERN DANCE!!!!! Nijinsky was an absolutly dance visionary. the audience , in that moment coulnt see the art of this choreographer. he was very forward for that history moment

I have studied music for over 20 years now and have seen and heard some of the most out there music. I can safely say, this was the biggest - WTF- moment I have ever encountered with music, yet I keep watching it over and over again.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not an expert and I'm NOT underestimating the innovative aspect of the ballet: And yet the "Chosen One"... is she even dancing? Looks more like hysterical jumping! Guess I need to warch the Kirov version for a comparison. Gee! This is something, anyway!

Amazing performance of an amazing piece of music. Still one of the most savage things I have ever seen.
IMO, people didn't riot so much over the aesthetics of the dance, more the raw emotional power of the music and what it portrayed leading to human sacrifice.

@fatovamingus I remember seeing this on PBS. Prior to the telecast I had read some articles regarding Nijinsky's choreography to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and performed by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1913. It was such a great pleasure and awe inspiring to see this reconstruction performed by the Joffrey Ballet. I felt like it was going back in time and to see history in the making. I'm frustrated in not finding a DVD version of this historical performance. I still have a hope for it..

Is this exactly the original coreography?
I've never actually seen the Rite of Spring and always thought it was ridiculous that people would riot over a ballet. But if I paid money to go see what I thought would be women in pink tutus and ended up seeing this, I would probably be a bit pissed too. This was an amazing performance of an amazing piece.

This is an amazing performance! We need to get the original master tape digitally remastered and released on DVD.

This was aired live on PBS in 1989 by the Joffrey. It was the world's first view of Nijinsky's stunning 1913 choreography. For some reason, the Joffrey and PBS won't release it. It's ridiculous. They're repeating exactly what happened to this choreography in the first place.
