Here's a trick to make you naturally breath from your Abdomen.. Stick your tongue against the back of your top teeth, right where your gum line is, and then breath through your nostrils :-)

Hopes this works.............so much is lost in the speed of society doing nothing fast. I have a Hypertension issue that I think will be greatly reduced by this simple natural way to breathe. Thanks for posting. CR.

@sachmofranklin Yes! it's the way we are supposed to be breathing all the time. Just try to observe your breath and notice its intimate relationship with your mental, emotional and physical state. When we are relaxed, we breath with our abdomen.
No wonder you are getting out of breath - we never should breathe in through the mouth! When we practice yoga, we only breathe through the nose (both inhale and exhale). If you perform some intense physical training you might choose to exhale through the mouth, yet inhalation is always through the nose. Breathing in through the mouth is like eating through the nose:) If you breathe through the mouth you are not getting any prana (zoyayoga.com/knowledge/basic-yoga-knowledge/236-prana)

it is indeed an excellent explanation. And yes we have "forgotten" how to breathe naturally - the way babies breathe.
I believe it is because we have all been conditioned to not show a "bulging belly".
FWIW, majority of health issues will be solved by Abdominal breathing.

@deepakartal - thank you for your comment! you are absolutely right! a good thing that we don't need to bulge the belly out too much even when we breathe with our belly. In a correct standing or sitting position when abdominal breath is performed, the lower abdomen (below the navel) remains still. the upper abdomen bulges out in inhalation but not so much that it's very obvious. I breathe with my abdomen all the time, and I was told that I still look like I've "got no belly":)))
