Could be a photo duplicator, but it looks medical. My guess is a device for duplicating x-rays, probably dental. The clue is the silver capacitor above the socket which would provide an intense flash of light. The curved metal piece below the light would focus the light. Put an x-ray & unexposed film in the holder, slide it in & then flash the light. The 3 opaque glass slides diffuse the light & control the exposure. The pin switch at the top prevents flashing the light in your face.

It could be some kind of a light, or maybe something used to copy photos, but I'm just guessing.

I have 3 generations of family watching and we have reason to believe its a camera of some kind.

At first I thought it was a camera too. But it has a spot to plug in a cord, a light bulb socket inside and there is no spot to mount a lens. There's also no mirror inside to direct light towards a film plane.
