The film begins with Jane Hurshman (Beatty) shooting her common-law husband Billy Stafford (McHattie) in his sleep, and then shows the resulting police investigation and trial, interspersed with flashbacks showing the domestic abuse that Stafford inflicted on Hurshman over the course of their relationship.

  • I remember seeing this movie when i was quite young and it was traumatizing, what Jane endured is unthinkable to most people. My heart aches when I think of her existance with that monster. I have always wondered what happened to her boys and how they are coping. Anyone know anything?

  • Oh yeah, I would have definitely killed his ass . I would have done a Burning Bed on him . What a FUCKING COWARD . Any man who abuses his wife or his children deserve a bullet right in the damn head .

  • there are three books on this case which is a true story:

    Life with Billy,

    Life after Billy,

and the third, Life and Death with Billy

    by Brain Vallée

I personally met Jane in Halifax shortly before her death.

I liked her and we miss her.

20 yrs later her story lives on..hopefully her story over the years has given many people the strength and courage to get out of an abusive relationship so they can heal and live a better life .....free from abuse.

  • Jane Hurshman Corkum, a Canadian housewife who killed her abusive husband Billy Stafford in 1982 and was famously acquitted. The Crown later appealed, concerned with the legal precedent, and she pled out to manslaughter and received a six-month sentence, and was released after two months.

After her release, she spoke out about spousal abuse, then an all-but-ignored subject.

On Feb 23, 1992, her body was found in a car on the Halifax waterfront, dead from a single gunshot wound.

  • i cant get over the part where hes bawling his head off and when they are in bed and she reaches over and consoles him..

  • Why would her son just leave her on the floor???? He saw that she was bleeding
