Natalie Dessay: (noun) the true epitome of a coloratura soprano, perhaps one of the most amazing operatic vocalists ever known to man. Able to hit high A-flats over high C with such control and beauty that it's both inhuman and angelic. (synonyms) amazing, astonishing, brilliant, delightful, fantastic, magnificent, perfect. :)

Everyone says 'oh, she's lost her voice - she doesn't sing her Ab6 anymore'. Yeah...she's 47 and she's pulling perfect high Ebs out of nowhere. I wouldn't consider that a voice lost, I would consider that a voice kept very well.

I adore Dessay. I saw that Lucia at the Met and was completely blown away. It's only recently that I have noticed an enduring instability in her tone. Her acting and charm remain undiminished. I think a break from a stressful career would do her voice and herself a world of good. She has been in demand the world over for what, 15? 20? years.

It was also Sutherland's last performance in London, I think, with Horne and Pavarotti - imagine having those three sing at a party.

I just watched the mad scene from Lucia from 2011, and she brought me to tears. I didn't notice anything like the loss of overtones that so many coloraturas show after this many years - the instrument is still there.

The operetta itself is Die Fledermaus. One of the conceits of the piece is that during a dinner party, the host has invited a singer to perform; this is often a singer with a night off from another performance. They sing whatever -- the Fruhlingsstimmen Waltz is not technically part of a standard Fledermaus. For example, you can find Thomas Hampson singing Largo Al Factotum in his guest turn in a Fledermaus.

The added push on that last note was a little too hard on her delicate vocals.

You are right -- especially considering she has come back from two surgeries. Many singers have suffered nodules and broken blood vessels: a) it's really easy to pop a chord - one cough, one ill-timed speck of something caught in the throat, one performance too many - and b) she sings at a level that keeps her in high demand. Singers of her fame and quality follow punishing schedules. The voice is delicate, especially a coloratura instrument, and requires rest.

This is especially true after her singing of Cleopatra at the Met in 2013
