Reasi (Jammu): After over 500 quake-hit children from Jammu and Kashmir were adopted by a Pune- based agency another NGO is adopting 100 children from militancy-affected areas.

Ruby Khalid hails from Gool, Udhampur and she has spent her life in the shadow of guns.

"Hamare ghar main militant aaye the, unhone kahaa 'darwaaza kholo,' phir mere daddy ko le gaye aur unki garden kaatui. Mere uncle ko maara aour dadi ko maar diya (Militants came to our house asking us to open the door, they took my father and beheaded him later. They even killed my uncle and grandmother)," Rubiya says.

A Delhi-based NGO, Sewa Bharti has adopted Rubiya and 99 others like her to give them a life away from the bloodshed.

Questions had been raised earlier about the credentials of adoption agencies coming to the Valley.

However, the army, which has selected the children and the agency says that they have followed a careful procedure for adoption of children.

"We have gone into great details regarding the criteria of selecting the NGOs and I am optimistic that these children after 10 years, will be some of the finest citizens of the country," Uniform Force, Brigadier K K Bhattacharya says.

The 100 adopted children are in the age group of five to 15. They will study till Class 12 in boarding schools in Delhi.

Their parents and guardians are happy that their children are in safe hands.

"Mere bachcha militants ke wajeh se disturbed hain. Mujhe militants se threats aa rahe hain per mujhe ab 101 per cent khushi hai ki mera baccha jis maksad ke liye ja rahan hai, who kamyab hoke ayega. Ab mere dil mein sukun hai aur mein chain se so sakunga (My children are disturbed by the militants. I have received threats from them, but I have drawn 101 per cent happiness from the fact that my children will come back successful from whatever aim they are going. My mind is at peace now and I can sleep well)," a resident of Mahore, Udhampur, Shamsudin says.

This journey will hopefully give them back their lost childhood and new dreams to chase.
