The Vienna Boys' Choir spends the summer holiday in Hinterbichl in the East Tyrolean Alps in the movie "Wenn die Glocken hell erklingen" (1959).

Here, the choir boys sing two folk songs, including Friedrich Glück's setting of von Eichendorff's "Das zerbrochene Ringlein".

In einem kühlen Grunde
Da geht ein Mühlenrad,
Mein Liebchen ist verschwunden,
Das dort gewohnet hat.

Ich möcht als Reiter fliegen
Wohl in die blutge Schlacht,
Um stille Feuer liegen
Im Feld bei dunkler Nacht.

Hör ich das Mühlrad gehen:
Ich weiß nicht, was ich will
Ich möcht am liebsten sterben,
Da wärs auf einmal still!

  • @ifuliki Hi again. You're most welcome. However I think you're thinking I was a member of the Vienna Boys Choir. Unfortunately I wasn't a member, but wished I had been.

  • @musikview Thank you. What a wonderful experience it must have been to be a member of such a choir.

  • @ifuliki A Vienna choirboy stays until his voice changes. Outgrowing the choir is not such a terrible experience for many of the boys. As one option, a boy who has just outgrown the choir is given the chance of remaining in the school to finish his high school education at no cost to him (if I'm correct. about the no-cost part).

  • Does a boy have to leave the choir when he turns 14 or can he stay until his voice changes? That is a terrible decision for both the boy and the choir master.

  • Hello editor,

I miss the lyrics of the second song: "Wenn der Kuckuck schreit...."

I will help you if you want, but I guess, that you yourself speak German....:)

Apart from that: I have the movie too and I like it !

No problem for me, if you delete this comment.
