A group of concerned citizens organized an event to expose and protest the criminalization of homelessness and the fact that there is no free and legal place to sleep for some folks. The eco-sustainable event, led by People Project, was set up in a small park which is seldom used, and the participants embraced an honor system including non-violence and no use of substances. The encampment was meant to last 10 days, but on the 4th or 5th day, on April 25 2007, Arcata police disbanded the event. As a result of police intervention, one man had a seizure and an ambulance was brought to the scene. Many local residents, homeless people, and students protested the intervention as well as the treatment of the event participants.

  • That's not the point these people, myself included did not and were not charged with any crimes, just detained, stolen from and abused over and over is this Guantanamo Bay?

  • Jesus was a Carpenter you moron!

He would've built himself a house or got a job.

He wasn't a filthy freeloading bum!

  • I understand it was a direct action against the lack of public restrooms, no drinking or hand washing stations...But, most of all the city prohibits any sleep. You risk what is going on here!

I want a safe place, without the cities help.

Go to w w w(dot)indybay(dot)org and push in " Arcata People Project" for a true count.

    I want change!

  • You Rock! Dawn777, what an awesome question you ask?

Have any caring Arcata resident even have thought about that and then sent in 70 cops to break up a drum circle?

  • Where would Jesus sleep?

These folks are being traumatized by the system and arrested for trying to sleep safely.

    Shame on Arcata California.
