This is a short demonstration of Descent 3 being controlled by Nintendo's Wii remote, running on a PC.

I did this using Bluetooth to connect the remote, and GlovePIE using a custom script I made to convert the remote's signals into joystick signals that Windows understands.

A large difference between my controls and those I have seen in other videos (only a few exist) is that mine include the WiiMote's InfraRed camera for controlling. This allows me to point-and-shoot to control the pitch and yaw, and use the other available axes for additional controls (which is ideal considering that Descent is one of the most advanced games when it comes to maneuverability controls).

As a side note, this isn't meant to be a demonstration of my mad Descent skillz, as it is much harder to control with the WiiMote than with a joystick such as the SideWinder (I'm still trying to work out some kinks in the controls). No, I don't just suck at the game.

Control scheme:
IR Sensor: Pitch, Yaw
WiiMote Roll: Roll ship
Nunchuk pitch: Slide vertically
Nunchuk joystick Y-axis: Throttle (forwards/backwards)
Nunchuk joystick X-axis: Slide horisontally
B-Button (trigger): Primary Weapon
A-Button: Secondary weapon
1-Button: Cycle primary weapon
2-Button: Cycle secondary weapon
C-Button: Afterburner
Z-Button: GuideBot

  • @D3Videos Thanks! Definitely feel free to link people to this. I think a LONG time ago I had a DescentBB account but I can't remember haha. Maybe I'll hit it up sometime.

  • This is a great setup, i'm sure more people on descentbb (com or net ) would like to know more about it.

  • @LaunchpadGP I know man, on XP it'll show up sometimes, and then other times it won't appear in the joysticks menu no matter what you do. They've made game port to USB converters that apparently fixes the problem, but it's a lot if trouble to go to. WiiMote seemed like a fun alternative. And yes, I would also LOVE to see this on WiiWare.

  • I used the sidewinder for this game too, it's a great joystick... unfortunately it doesn't work very will with WinXP or newer and I haven't been able to find any other joystick like it.

I really hope they are still working on Descent for Wiiware.
