The costume designs in Inu Yasha borrowed a lot from the Heian era (when this story takes place), as well as court costumes from later eras. All the characters in The Tale of Genji are from the courtier class, so it is understandable that the outfits look the same. The dresses are junihitoe, which are traditionally 12 layers.

Just FYI...the Genji clan that the main character belongs to is the same as the Minamoto clan that famously defeated the Taira clan in the most significant battle between samurai...the war between the two clans ended with the mass suicide of the entire Taira clan, including the Emperor.

@chungAE1 Most of the costumes in Inu Yasha are based on this period, even though most of the characters are from far further ahead in Japanese history...strange, I know.

why does Genji look like a woman?

@r3dst4r9O That style was the height of fashion and attractiveness at the time.

I wonder is this anime based on the Tale of Genji, the original one? Or does this anime has changed some part of it?

@minyoon0205 There are some very minor changes, but a lot of omissions. This movie only covers the first half of The Genji, but there are lots of pieces from the first half that aren't in it either.
